Remembering Claudia

On Sunday we received the tragic news that former Westerley member Claudia Manera died following a road traffic collision two weeks ago. All our thoughts are with Claudia’s family, and she will be dearly missed by the club.

Member Gill Morgan knew Claudia very well, and remembers her below:

I first met Claudia doing a grass running session at Perivale Park around the football pitches, where we were savaged by insects. The bloodletting did not stop us and we hung in there and pushed hard. After this we became an established pair, training together both on the track and grass for a number of years and through various injuries.

Claudia was Italian, from near Turin. She was passionate, determined and a free spirit. Multi-faceted and extremely talented – artist, drama teacher, fitness instructor and first and foremost an athlete. When I first met Claudia she worked as a librarian, but decided she wanted to join the police force. To facilitate this process she became a Special Constable – I had immense respect for her doing this as this required a massive time commitment on top of working full time, and yet she still managed to train regularly and continue running marathons.

After a spell in the Police Force she decided to follow her heart and work as a personal Trainer Fitness Instructor. I knew Claudia mainly as a runner, but she was also an accomplished triathlete and cyclist.

My lasting memory of Claudia will be doing cross country with her. She hated the mud and the cold but it never stopped her. At the end of races the rest of us would make a beeline towards the cakes and tea, but Claudia always went to work eliminating any remnants of the mud. She inspired all of those who rubbed shoulders with her – and will be sadly missed.

Claudia is also remembered by her family and friends in this article from the Evening Standard.

Several Westerley members will be taking part in a march this Saturday (28th October) at Ealing to campaign for safety improvements to the Uxbridge Road. More details can be found here. Please do join us if you are able to.
